If miracles do exist, then this amazing Nigerian-American singer is living proof. I bet we all remember the Sosoliso Flight Crash of December 10th, 2005. With the resulting loss of 107 lives, tragedy snuffed out the light in the sun.
Born on October 29th, 1989, Kechi Okwuchi was one of its only two survivors. She suffered third-degree burns on over 65% of her body and was only given a 30% chance of survival by her doctors. But survive she did and has since undergone more than a hundred reconstructive surgeries to date.
Kechi’s journey to recovery has been attributed to faith, support from family and friends, and music. Although music had previously only been a leisurely activity for her, Kechi’s love for it attained new heights as it became a source of distraction during the period of her recovery following in the wake of the crash.
I remember watching Kechi’s very first performance on America’s Got Talent (AGT) stage. Standing tall, the amazing survivor told an abridged version of her story and ended with “I want to share my voice”. This was in response to Simon Cowell’s question with regards to why she was there. Kechi’s rendition of Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran seemed to enthrall the audience who gave her a standing ovation and four “yes” votes from the judges.
A beacon of light, a survivor, and brave are a few of the numerous adjectives used to describe this amazing star. In a world where scars are taunted, Kechi insists hers doesn’t define her and encourages others to set their beauty standards.
This is a strong and powerful message that should serve as an inspiration to those dealing with both seen and unseen scars. The beautiful and intelligent Kechi remains undaunted by her burns and graduated in Honours with a degree in Economics from the University of Saint Thomas, Houston, Texas in 2015.
Life after AGT for this star has been filled with performances at different gatherings, fundraisers, galas, among others. Her single “Don’t you dare” was released in June 2018 (don’t forget to check it out). Kechi is an inspirational speaker, artiste and burns advocate for different burn survivor organizations. Well, she is doing what she loves and inspiring people along the way. You can follow her on her official Twitter page (@Kechi) and Instagram page (@kechiofficial)
If you are looking for inspiration, Kechi should make the list. Her happy spirit, talent, and amazing personality has garnered her recognition and attracted a large fanbase, of which I am proudly one.
Dear Kechi, if you ever get to read this, know that I am sending love and light your way for those dark days whenever they come. I pray you win and reach the peak of your career, education, and business endeavors.
At this time in the world, a little motivation never hurt anyone. And Kechi Okwuchi is the true definition of a living one.
