When God Feels Quiet

Growing up, I remember watching Bible stories and cartoons depicting what the voice of God might sound like. Some portrayed it with thunder and lightning, loud and overwhelming. Others described it as still and quiet, almost like a whisper.

I don’t think I ever fully chose one version over the other. I just believed that God could not be boxed into a single way of speaking. That He could speak in different ways and through unexpected moments.

For a long time, that felt true. Until it didn’t.

I did not recognize the silence at first, but there was a season when it became impossible to ignore. A time when I had more questions than answers. Painful experiences I felt I did not deserve, and heartbreaking moments that, years later, would become part of the person I am still becoming.

In those moments, it became easy to direct my anger towards God. Because if God is good, and if God is fair, then surely none of this was supposed to happen.

Right?

So, what do you do when God seems quiet?

I don’t think I am alone in asking that question. I know that there are people living in that space between praying and seeing answers, caught between hope and disappointment. I have been there too.

Waiting is not easy.

I don’t have it all figured out, but over time I have come to understand something that has helped me. Waiting is not wasted. It is often where the deepest work is happening, even when we cannot see it. Sometimes God’s silence feels like an invitation to trust without clarity. To keep believing when nothing seems to be changing.

Maybe faith is not always found in having the answers.

Maybe it is found in choosing to keep walking, even when the path ahead is uncertain. Choosing to pray when heaven feels silent. Choosing to trust that God’s silence is not His absence.

Of course, this is much easier said than done.

I am still learning what it means to wait well. There are still days when doubt creeps in, even when I try to hold on to faith. But I keep coming back to the promise that He makes all things beautiful in His time.

When I look back, I can see the ways He carried me through seasons I thought would break me. Not always in the way I expected, but always with a faithfulness I could only recognize in hindsight. Those memories remind me that I have never truly walked alone.

So, if you find yourself in a season where God feels quiet, know that you are not alone. The waiting may be difficult, but it is not without purpose. Sometimes, faith is simply believing that even in the silence, God is still there.

And perhaps, one day, you will look back and discover that He was speaking all along.

Thank you so much for this piece Arinto. It’s encouraging not to give up. I am in that phase now. Truth be told, waiting is the hardest thing to do.
    God will help us all.
    Once again, thank you🥰🥰

About Me

Hello! I'm Diane

I am someone who has always turned to writing to make sense of things. Especially the parts of life that feel confusing, heavy or quietly complicated.

I write about mental health, relationships, identity, faith, and the in-between seasons we often move through without much language. Most of what you will find here comes from lived experience, observation, and a habit of sitting with thoughts a little longer than most people do.

I do not write because I have the answers. I write because it helps me understand myself, other people and the world around me. Writing gives me the space to slow down and to say things honestly, without needing to tidy them up. Some of what I write is still in the process of becoming, and I am comfortable letting it be that way.

Thoughts on Ink is where those reflections live. If you are drawn to writing that feels thoughtful, unhurried and real, I am glad you are here.
