Those who know me well know that I love babies. I guess this is because I find them not only adorable but fascinating. More importantly, I came to understand the power of a smile from those little ones in a way I never had before.
I remember spending a day some time ago where I babysat some kids. That experience formed the discussion for today. One thing that struck me in my entire encounter was that kids laugh with reckless abandon. I could be mad at one of their theatrics, and immediately they smile, the anger and frustrations drain away. Their smiles are highly infectious, something I lack words to describe.
We can all learn a lesson or two from them.
A quote by Dale Carnegie comes to mind, “the expression one wears on one’s face is far more important than the clothes one wears on one’s back”. A smile holds so much power than you can imagine.
“Smile ke, the current craziness in this country has wiped every reason to do that”, you may say. While this is quite understandable, I think we all owe it to ourselves to think of creative ways to make ourselves happy.
Smiling and having a cheerful disposition naturally endears people to your side. The power of a smile is in its ability to change moods from happy to sour in the blink of an eye. It is in the ability to cause a change in the expression of people and offer them hope. If you think I am exaggerating, consider the times you were so angry and saw a video showing the toothless grin of a baby or the laughter from a toddler. I bet that made you smile, even if it was for a little bit.
Have you ever been stuck for a day with a person who struggles to crack a smile? You would realize that the person unconsciously ended up ruining your mood. Sour dispositions are also influential. It is up to us to make sure our cheerful ones are doubly so. There is already too much chaos, negativity, and sadness in the world that we need all the light and happiness around us we can get. Little wonder Sri Chinmoy rightly said, “smile, smile, smile at your mind as often as possible. Your smiling will considerably reduce your mind’s tearing tension”.
I hope after reading this, you will go forth and frown no more. I’ll end this with a quote from Tom Wilson, “a smile is happiness you’ll find right under your nose.”
