Dear Nigeria

Dear Nigeria,

I write this with tears streaming down my face. I know the videos and pictures I have seen will forever be etched on my memory. The continuous barrage of shots at your children without arms or protection which didn’t have a stop manual. To sons, daughters, fathers, sisters, and brothers.

Dear Nigeria, God created and gave you wings to fly. He made you the land with an abundance of milk and honey.

When did you become this way?

Once, we held your flag, proud to be associated with you. With the bold colours of green and white, we stood at attention while singing your anthem. We sang with conviction in our voices and hope in our eyes.

Tragically, we have entrusted you to the wrong hands. To those without conscience. And when a man is without conscience, evil finds a home in him and he becomes the deadliest. This has sadly been your case.

The rot in your system has run deep and youths are killed without cause or remorse.

In solidarity, we arose and held peaceful protests for our beloved land to get to the peak we knew she could. We extended roses of kindness and got bullets of war in exchange.

And more numbers added to the list of fallen heroes who deserved to be alive.

20th October 2020, you wept the loudest. For your children who died in the hands of those sworn to protect those affiliated with your name. On this day, the flag we proudly raised lies covered with the blood of the innocents. These ones never wanted to be martyrs; they simply wanted an opportunity to be able to live in their land.

What was their crime? I dare ask! They only wanted a better you and for that, their leaders have stolen their tomorrow. Permanently.

Their families stand by the door awaiting their arrival, but for your cause, they will walk no more.

How many more have to die for you? Ten? Hundred? Thousands? Or even millions?

All I know is that at this point, the only Nigerian dream is to stay alive long enough to leave you.
