On New Year Resolutions and Traditions

While we are all still basking in the euphoria of entering the year 2023, I’m sure resolutions must have crossed your mind at one point or the other. Well, they certainly crossed mine!

I have been an avid supporter of resolutions but 2022 changed it for me. On the 1st of this year, I remember just thanking God for being alive and making it through the craziness last year brought with it, as opposed to my usual go-to – comparing plans made and goals achieved, drawing up new ones, and assigning deadlines to them. In retrospect, the plans I made for last year did not pan out as I thought and life pushed me in directions I could never have anticipated. It is safe to say the tradition did not work out for me in 2022.

I have decided to start a new tradition instead – a gratitude journal, inspired by Jay Shetty. I bought a jar and plan to write a note to myself every week (detailing the positives that happened to me, no matter how small I think it is) and put it into the jar. When the curtain for 2023 is about to draw close, I will open the jar and have 52 reasons to be more thankful and have a positive mindset for the coming year.

Think of it as a way of literally counting your blessings and making sure none is missed. You are welcome to join me.

I hope this year, you take time to love yourself a little extra every day. It is so easy to get lost in the daily challenges that come your way and forget to prioritize yourself. While you get up each day and put one foot in front of the other, I hope you celebrate yourself and remember to pat yourself on the back. See that kindness you are quick to shower on others? Please extend it to yourself because you are deserving of it too.

It is perfectly okay to ditch the New Year Resolution Train if you feel like it. Resolutions do not have to have a fixed template or timeline for them to happen. It is okay to prioritize your mental health and happiness and go with the flow of what makes you happy. So, don’t let anyone pressure you if you have nothing planned as your New Year’s Resolution.

On this note, I wish every one of my readers the best year you could ever hope to have. I hope 2023 is the ‘IT’ year for you, the year you can look back and smile deeply because it brought a lot of answered prayers, renewed hope, and fulfilled dreams.

Happy New Year everyone, and congrats on making it to 2023!
